Ephemerality: Life-size and 1/7.5th scale Triceratops heads.
Based on conversations with Paleontologists, as well as my own extensive observations and research I have used non-traditional materials– plastic, foam, and rubber– to create an accurate, life-size Triceratops head. On the broad frill of this creature’s head is a still-life inspired by vanitas paintings which focus on the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.
Memento mori (Latin for “remember that you too must one day die”) is used to describe the themes within the 16th and 17th century Dutch vanitas (“vanity”) paintings that are laden with symbolic imagery to warn the viewer of the perils of vanity and gluttony. I am curiously exploring how this centuries-old morality lesson evolves while being preached from between the horns of massive, extinct dinosaurs.
